Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro

4.3
#1 of 2,001 in Beaches in Brazil
Lively Copacabana Beach features warm waters and a wide stretch of white sand, with numerous hotels, restaurants, bars, and night clubs dotting its promenade. You can swim, play sports, relax on the sand, enjoy freshly-caught fish delicacies, and soak up the atmosphere of one of Brazil’s most popular tourist destinations. The beach is policed and lit all through the night, so it’s always abuzz with hundreds of visitors, musicians, and food vendors. Take a leisurely sunset walk on the beach’s iconic walkway, and stay late to see locals singing, dancing, and playing footvolley right on the water’s edge. Remember to always swim where the locals do, and leave all your valuables at the hotel. • We visited Copacabana on a very hot weekend and while it was beautiful, it was extremely crowded and you could hardly move along the beach. Lots of tourists and locals. Lots of traffic in the area and...  more »
  • The beaches in Copacabana are extensive and beautiful. You have the option of renting umbrellas and chairs, there are also many vendors that offer from food, drinks, dresses, to things like speakers and cellular covers for water. It is nice at dusk to walk along the avenue Atlántida where you see the people playing and training on the beach and also the local and foreign handicraft stalls. On the other hand I recommend not leaving your belongings alone on the beach as they say, not very safe....

  • I hate to rate a beach so low as the rating reflects only on a negative experience I had. 1 man tried to distract my friend whilst another leaned over from behind me and tried to grab my phone, I didn't let go and got dragged from the bench. Police were maybe 200m away. Don't take any valuables, keep tour phone hidden and your wits about you. Hopefully Rio are trying to combat this issue.
  • Copacabana beach is everything you'd expect it to be...a 4 kilometre beach stretch absolutely bustling with everything from vacationers to locals out to have a good time to beach hawkers selling everything from bikinis to local artefacts. The water is clean and the tide (at least in December) is mild enough to swim in. Loved it.
