Parque Nacional Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro

4.7
Discover the world’s largest urban hand-planted rainforest at Parque Nacional Tijuca, established in 1961 to protect a fragile ecosystem of hundreds of species of plants and animals, many of which are threatened by extinction. The rainforest plays an important role in the city’s fresh water supply, and covers a huge area of over 32 square kilometers (12 sq mi). In addition to sheltering the rainforest, the park features several tourist attractions, including the colossal Christ the Redeemer sculpture. Also contained within the park’s grounds are the Cascatinha Waterfall and the Mayrink Chapel, with murals painted by artist Candido Portinari. Use the park’s picnic facilities and explore the rainforest on your own, or by joining one of many guided hikes and sightseeing walks offered in the area. • Lots of hiking trails in the area around Christ the Redeemer and winding roads. Our guide said we might see monkeys and other animals but we did not see any wildlife - just lots of vegetation.  more »
  • Visiting the Tijuca forest is something indescribable. The person comes out of there ecstatic with so much beauty and energy from the place. There's still a waterfall bath to choose from. A tour that super recommend for Cariocas and tourists.

  • On December 7 2018, my wife and I visited the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer perched on top of Mount Corcovado. After 20 minutes tram journey & walking up elevator and steps, the open arms of Christ greeted us. Since we are in our 70's, we felt blessed to be able to travelled thousands of miles by flight. Jostling with the crowd, we were able to take lots of photos of Christ & the panoramic views of Rio.
  • The Tijuca Forest is a tropical rainforest in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is claimed to be the world's largest urban forest, covering some 32 km², although there are sources assigning this title to the urban forest of Johannesburg, South Africa, where between 6 and 9.5 million trees were planted.
