Sugarloaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro

#1 of 4,783 in Parks in Brazil
Ride or walk to the city’s iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, named in the 16th century after the conical shape of a concentrated loaf of sugar, which it strongly resembles. The mountain is located at the mouth of Guanabara Bay, on a peninsula sticking out into the Atlantic Ocean. Towering 396 m (1,299 ft) above the bay, the mountain is one of several monolithic granite and quartz formations rising from the water’s edge. To reach the summit, you can take one of two glass-walled cable cars, which operate continuously throughout the day. These bubble-shaped cars, which can hold up to 65 people each and run along a 1,400-meter (4,593 ft) scenic route, offer passengers 360-degree views of the surrounding city. • This is really the tour to definitely skip in Rio. View is duplication from Christ statue. The queues are horrible and you waste 4 hours for a big risk of fog. I literally lost a day in Rio. My advice...  more »
  • To better enjoy the look it is recommended that you go only when the day is clean. Any cloud ever hinders that beautiful and unforgettable look. Place to visit with family and friends. It has access to people with special needs for locomotion. It has a souvenir shop. There is no environment in case of rain.

  • The gem of Rio - it is in all of the postcards, and rightfully so. This massive mound is known as sugar loaf due to its resemblance to a literal loaf of sugar. Sugar was packages in loaves by the Portuguese before being shipped for ease in transport. We both took the cable car and climbed the back-side of the mound in order to reach the top. The latter was obviously much more difficult, but is by far our favorite way of getting to the top - it provides you with a sense of achievement! Anyhow, on top you will be blessed with gorgeous panoramic views of the city. A must in Rio.
  • What else can you say about this monument? As bad of a rep Rio de Janeiro gets, the geography in this region is spectacular. Breathtaking. You can stand up top and just watch every angle around you and be amazed at this natural creation. I've been there so many times and each time I'm still excited to go again and take even more pictures.
