Create an itinerary including Casa Museo Rafael Nunez
For insight into Colombian political history, head to Casa Museo Rafael Nunez--the charming mansion of the late poet, lawyer, and president. Nunez is credited with writing the words of Colombia's national anthem, and partly of the nation's constitution of 1886. One wing of his residence now serves as a museum, where you can survey some of his personal possessions and documents. For an extra glimpse into his life and times, head to the chapel opposite the house, which holds Nunez's ashes. Not all guides will have English as a spoken language; bring a phrase book along. • This is a pretty little house and a nice museum. You can see the whole thing in maybe a half hour. The best thing is the price. It's free! Also, check out the little church across the street...

  • This is the home of Colombia's version of Thomas Jefferson, he had a fascinating life and well worth learning about. The home is well-preserved and airy, within walking distance of the old city...

  • Very interesting house and it's free! Nobody else was here when we visited, it's a rare quiet spot in over-touristed Cartegena. The original furnishings are well preserved. It's a small place so won't take you long to visit.
  • About a 20 minute walk from the Walled City. Great place to learn about the history of Colombia. Mostly in Spanish, so keep that in mind when visiting. Talks about his life and important events in Colombian history...my favorite was the National Anthem...which he helped write. Beautiful grounds and really well maintained! A park across the street contains a church and memorial to the anniversary of Colombian Independence.
