Torre del Reloj, Cartagena

See one of the best-known architectural symbols of the city and the main gateway to the old town at Torre del Reloj. The 30 m (98 ft) tower--part of the city walls guarding the inner section of old houses and churches from the sea--was originally built in the 17th century and restored in the 19th century. A statue of Pedro de Heredia, the city's founder, dominates a square full of restaurants, shops, and street vendors.
