Trip Planner: South America / Colombia / Cundinamarca Department / Tierra Negra / Laguna de Guatavita
Follow the trail of mythical El Dorado and you'll end up at Laguna de Guatavita. Legend has it that a Muisca tribal chief known as El Dorado--the Golden One--covered himself in golden dust and disappeared into the mysterious crater lake to fulfill an initiation rite. Over the centuries, the myth evolved until El Dorado came to represent a lost city allegedly hiding an abundance of treasures. While you're unlikely to find material riches on a visit to the site, you can enjoy splendid views of the circular lake and its surrounding area. Overrated. It is pretty but why an entrance fee for that? We have seen plenty of more beautiful lake and lagunas in other countries and it was free (why would it not be??). Hard to reach without car. But it was interesting though.
Beautiful place but the park forces you to take a guide on an incredibly easy path to follow.
