Pont des Arts, Paris

#96 of 2,919 in Things to do in Paris
A pedestrian bridge, Pont des Arts crosses the Seine River, linking the Institut de France and the central square of the Palais du Louvre. Many lovebirds come here to lock padlocks to the railing or grating on the side of the bridge. They then throw the key into the Seine as a romantic gesture, representing the couple's commitment. Note that the French police patrol the bridge to stop people from throwing keys into the river. Use our Paris trip maker tool to arrange your visit to Pont des Arts and other attractions in Paris.

  • A bridge you might cross when you walk from the northern part of Paris to the Eiffel Tower or the other way around. It's a nice photo spot, also the buildings around. There are often musicians to give you a very Parisian feeling while you cross the bridge!
  • Pont des Arts is one several interesting bridges that cross the Seine, connecting the Left and Right Banks. Historically, the first metal bridge in Paris was built here between 1802-04, that bridge was closed for usage in 1977 and then collapsed in 1979. The present Pont des Arts was built in 1984 as a steel reconstruction of the original. In recent years the bridge was noted for the incredible number of padlocks that were attached to it. These were removed back in 2015 I believe due to the incredible amount of weight and strain that had been added to the bridge. Now it is a clean and simple bridge again.
