Noisy and vibrant, Piazza Navona is the hub of artistic and commercial activity in this part of the city. Known for its Baroque architecture, alfresco restaurants, ornate fountains, and street artists, the square attracts visitors from around the world. The centerpiece is an elaborate fountain--representing the rivers Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Plate-- created by Baroque sculptor Gianlorenzo Bernini. A massive, ancient obelisk tops the fountain. Artists Giacomo della Porta and Antonio della Bitta sculpted the two smaller fountains here. The plaza was built in the first century on the site of a former arena where ancient Romans came to watch various competitions. A great place to sit and listen to genuine music played and watch some artists “really” practice their crafts. Sitting on a bench for an hour or two is not unusual. Beware of the vendors.... but more so the ones that want to engage you with placing a trinket in your hand. Don’t let this happen..... not answer their mundane questions..... like... What time is it? I like your shoes.... Where are you from? These are ploys to check your language and then buy something you don’t want... and be prepared for the story of extraordinary proportions...... With these tips known. Your joy of this Piazza will be much better.

Always a amazing piazza to visit and have a short rest from all the walking in the core of Rome. The famous Bernini fountains are found here and usually hordes of tourists. Skip the restaurants/cafes here as they are geared for tourists with prices to match. Make sure to come at night too as the atmosphere is lovely. Always look up and if the church is open you must visit as the interior is extraordinary. Enjoy!
