Church on the Hill, Sighisoara

Climb the 175 steps of the covered wooden scholars' stairway to reach Church on the Hill, which shelters 16th- and 17th-century tombs in the crypt below the main altar. The church was erected gradually from 1345 to 1525 on the upper plateau of a hill offering broad views over the town and the road. Inside look for decorated fragments of the late 15th-century frescoes, funerary sculptures, and polyptych shrines brought from other churches. Notice the 15th-century carved pulpit and stone holy water font. Visit the nearby graveyard, the final resting place of the Saxons who built this citadel, which is included in the World Heritage List.
