Statue of Raffles, Singapore

#202 of 1,192 in Things to do in Singapore
The founder of modern Singapore, Sir Stamford Raffles is timelessly encapsulated at Statue of Raffles. The statue sits in the spot that tradition says the Raffles first landed in the city, at Boat Quay. Originally unveiled in 1887, the original figure was replaced by an all-white polymarble edition in 1972. Sir Raffles stands, arms folded, gazing thoughtfully out over the sea. The statue has a quirky history itself, having been relocated twice: first for being too close to a nearby football pitch, and second for temporary protection during Japanese occupation. The original, bronze statue still exists just a short walk away. Make Statue of Raffles a part of your Singapore vacation plans using our Singapore trip itinerary maker app.

Message from Singapore Tourism Board
Visitors can grab a postcard-worthy moment with a statue of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of modern Singapore. Visitors looking to photograph a historical Singapore icon should head to the Singapore River, where a white statue of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles - the founder of modern Singapore - stands guard. It is on this historic site where the British official first set foot on the island in 1819. A dark bronze statue of Sir Stamford Raffles is also located just a short walk away at the Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall.
