See life from behind bars at Prison Gate Museum, an 18th-century prison-turned-museum. Since 1882, the former prison has told tales of the crime and punishment that unfolded here over its seven centuries of history. Housing serious criminals, both rich and poor, the prison was known as a place of torture. Walk through the prisoner's cells, the interrogation room, the torture chambers, and the courtroom. Some prisoners were even publicly executed in the square in front of the prison. Note that the cell complex can only be viewed with an official guide, so check the schedule in advance. A visit to Prison Gate Museum represents just the start of the adventure when you use our The Hague travel route planner to plot your vacation.

This is a VERY small museum, I needed about 15 minutes to get through the exhibition. Descriptions are quite poor and only in Dutch or English. The staff was absolutely unfriendly and didn't seem to be organised at all. I would only recommend it because of the interesting building.
Speaker speaks in Dutch, people who dont understand will get headphones. Personnel were very kind and helpful. Stories were interesting. Unfortunately only 3 rooms are open for visits.
