Ishigaki

Ishigaki, the most populous island in the chain, features the country's southernmost city and acts as a transport hub for exploring the landmasses that surround.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Kondoi Beach and Kayaking & Canoeing. Step out of the city life by going to Canyoning & Rappelling Tours and Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave. And it doesn't end there: find your balance on the water with some of the best stand-up paddleboarding in the area, enjoy breathtaking views from Tamatorizaki Observatory, get outside with Cape Hirakubozaki, and stroll around Banna Park.

For other places to visit, more things to do, traveler tips, and more tourist information, read our Ishigaki road trip tool.

A city jurisdiction formed after the merger of several towns in 2005, Miyakojima spans six linked-up islands.
Get outdoors at Toguchi no Hama and Irabu-jima Island. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Higashi Hennazaki Lighthouse and Irabu Ohashi. And it doesn't end there: see some colorful creatures with a scuba or snorkeling tour, contemplate the waterfront views at Toriike Pond, step off the mainland to explore Shimojiiima Island, and enjoy the sand and surf at Sunayama Beach.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Appreciate the collections at Nara National Museum and Sengukan. Explore hidden gems such as Tenryuji Temple and Nishi Honganji. Venture out of the city with trips to Byodoin (in Uji), Ise (Sarutahiko Shrine, Ise Shrine Geku, &more) and Nara (Isuien Garden, Kasuga Grand Shrine, &more). The adventure continues: explore the different monuments and memorials at Koyasan Okunoin, take in the spiritual surroundings of Toji, don't miss a visit to Eikando Zenrinji Temple, and admire the striking features of Ninna-ji Temple.
