Built on a desolate swamp as a showcase capital of Imperial Russia, this grand city has certainly lived up to the expectations of its founder, Tsar Peter the Great.
Deepen your sense of the past at sights like Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and Kazan Cathedral. You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Peter and Paul Fortress and Bronze Horseman, Monument To Peter I. There's still lots to do: see the interesting displays at Russian Museum, get engrossed in the history at Vladimir Nabokov Museum, steep yourself in history at Palace Square, and browse the exhibits of Saint Isaac's Cathedral.
