Maseru

Founded in 1869 by the British, Lesotho's main city--Maseru--lies on the border with South Africa on a plateau surrounded by red hills.
Explore Maseru's surroundings by going to Maletsunyane Falls Semonkong (in Semonkong), Morija Museum & Archives (in Morija) and Gates of Paradise Pass (in Malealea). There's lots more to do: take your sightseeing to a higher altitude at Maluti Mountains, contemplate the long history of Thaba-Bosiu National Monument, see human ingenuity at work at Mohale Dam, and try to win big at Lesotho Sun Casino.

For photos, where to stay, reviews, and tourist information, read our Maseru route builder app.

Cape Town, South Africa to Maseru is an approximately 7-hour flight. You can also drive; or do a combination of bus and car. Traveling from Cape Town in December, expect a bit warmer with lows of 22°C in Maseru. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 28th (Mon) to allow time to travel back home.

Kingdom in the Sky
Mountainous Lesotho lends itself well to an adventurous holiday itinerary. Entirely located above 1,000 m (3,280 ft) in elevation, the country enjoys a cool climate with around 300 days of sunshine each year. Explorations of the mountains form the backbone of many Lesotho holidays. Remote villages located way up in the highlands, only accessible on foot or by horseback, offer a glimpse into the country's authentic culture with their lively markets, traditional eateries, and musical traditions.
