City of a Hundred Steeples

Caen is known for its historical buildings built during the reign of William the Conqueror, who was buried there, and for the Battle for Caen--heavy fighting that took place in and around Caen during the Battle of Normandy in 1944, destroying much of the city.
Family-friendly places like Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux and Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen will thrill your kids. Get out of town with these interesting Caen side-trips: Etretat (Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde & Falaises d'Etretat), Normandy American Cemetery (in Colleville-sur-Mer) and Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer (D-Day Monument & Omaha Beach). There's much more to do: admire the striking features of Mont Saint-Michel, take in nature's colorful creations at Fondation Claude Monet, explore the different monuments and memorials at Bayeux War Cemetery, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Cathedrale Notre-Dame.
