Set out on a journey through Anatolia's history, starting from the Paleolithic Age and ending with the present day at Anadolu Medeniyetleri Muzesi. Housed in a restored 15th-century Ottoman bazaar, the museum features over 200,000 artifacts, a portion of which are exhibited in chronological order. See the deer-shaped statuettes from the Early Bronze Age, Neolithic wall paintings, Paleolithic stone and bone tools, İznik pottery, and what is reputedly the world's most extensive collection of Hittite artifacts. Stop to have lunch in the historical setting of the nearby citadel or in one of several restaurants on the hill. I went to this museum during a 3-hour stopover on my way to Konya by train. So glad I did. A great museum with an outstanding collection. The exhibits are arranged to let you walk through time as you move from one civilization to the next. I couldn’t get over how impressive the collection is and how well set up it is for viewing. I didn’t want to leave.

This is is not the largest archaeological museum in the world but the collection is breathtaking, especially the Hittite artifacts. It has also a very nice garden with antiquities. It’s my favoriete place in Ankara.
