Bodrum Amphitheater, Bodrum City

At Bodrum Amphitheater, see one of the remaining structures from the ancient Greek city of Halikarnassus and get a glimpse into Bodrum's once great past. The well-preserved theater dates back to the reign of King Mausolos in the 4th century BCE. Walk through all three parts of the traditional theater: the skene, the orchestra, and the cavea. Climb up to the higher levels for great views of Bodrum Castle and the sea beyond. The structure serves as a prime example of classical Greek theater, with a capacity of around 13,000. Look closely at the seats: some were inscribed with the names of wealthy donors centuries ago. The theater is still used for concerts and festivals today and mixes the old with new renovations. Come prepared; the area can become a sun trap on hot days, and the hike to the top is fairly steep.
