Go on a journey below the surface of the Earth at Derinkuyu Yeralti Sehri, a place that once housed up to 20,000 people. This elaborate subterranean complex dates back to about the 7th century BCE and has been used as a refuge from raiders and invaders even in modern times. It descends eight floors and includes a church and a school, together with living quarters, stables, storage rooms, and manufacturing facilities. You can also see the ingenious air and water supply systems. The chambers and passageways are well-lit, but often narrow and with low ceilings, so anyone suffering from claustrophobia might experience discomfort. Take the guesswork out of planning a Derinkuyu vacation by using our trip itinerary maker.

UNESCO certified heritage. Must visit place in turkey. You can go down 8 levels from the ground level to see how the ancient people prepared the bunkers to safeguard themselves and their cattle. They have well planned accommodation, food storage area, grave, well etc. This could accommodate 1000s of people at a time. More information can be given by the guides during tours

It was quite interesting to see how they lived in the ancient underground cities, and it runs deep. Their methods of cooking, keeping warm and security measures were innovative and effective. Selim, our tour guide, was quite informative explaining how they lived and it seems he too was still impressed by how the dirt was moved kilometres away to the river so that their hideout wouldn't be compromised. I definitely recommend this green tour.
