Sehzade Mehmet Mosque, Istanbul

4.8
#25 of 246 in Historic Sites in Istanbul
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Admire the 16th-century Ottoman imperial design of Sehzade Mehmet Mosque, built as a memorial to the son of a sultan. As you enter the site, you'll first tour the outer courtyard with a fountain. Continue inside and look up to view a ceiling with five domes, each beautifully decorated in typical Turkish symmetrical patterns. Wear conservative clothing when you visit, and be sure to take a walk around the peaceful gardens surrounding the building. • A masterpiece of Ottoman architecture at its finest. Visit to contemplate, admire and soak in the elegant details and history.  more »
  • My 2nd favorite mosque in Istanbul (Hagia Sophia being the first)! So peaceful and attractive! Busy streets outside, but you wouldn't know it inside. Really nice!  more »

  • Come and listen to the imam with golden voice reciting quranic verses. This mosque is comparable to Blue Mosque, Soleiman. Deep in history, byzantine architecture and amazing central dome and ceiling lights.
  • Sublime, understated grandeur. This mosque is a quieter, less tourist-infested version of the Sultanahmet (Blue) Mosque. I was very moved by its intricate, ornate interior, and its grand marbled walls.
