The Roman Baths, Bath

#1 of 244 in Things to do in Bath
See how ancient Romans bathed at The Roman Baths. Hot springs have bubbled up in Bath since time immemorial, and the Romans began developing a temple and public bathhouse here around 60 CE. Today, you can tour the various sections of the incredibly well-preserved complex, including the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, and the Roman Bath House. The main area of interest is the open-air, column-lined Great Bath. When you enter the site, make sure to take the audio guide that's included in the ticket price. After touring the different areas, enter the museum to see artifacts collected from the original bath. As tempting as it might be to bathe yourself where ancient Romans once did, the site does not permit you to enter the water. Before you head to Bath, plan trip itinerary details with our user-friendly Bath online road trip planner, to make sure you see all that Bath has to offer, including The Roman Baths.

  • If you are in Bath this is absolutely a "must see". We did it in combination with the Fashion Museum (which was also quite nice) and spent more than three hours there. There is are a lot of displays to see and the building itself is worth your attention. Most of our last hour was spent on the guided tour (included in the price of admission) which was very good. Our group was a manageable size (about a dozen) and the guide was great. She was enthusiastic and informed, and was able to respond to questions from the group with authority and confidence. All in all a very nice afternoon.
  • It was an amazing visit to the Roman Bath. It is still a mystery how and where the hot spring came about and is generating hot water till today. The exhibits within Roman Bath brings you back to the Roman times and understand the lives of people of Roman Britain. For those who enjoy history, it is a place to visit. The exhibits can be a little bit to overwhelming to understand unless you have done your own prior reading before visiting. Have fun visiting the Roman Bath.
