Castle · Tourist Spot
Carlisle Castle has played an important role in the history of Carlisle for centuries. Explore this remarkably well-preserved castle's hallway and towers. Discover the dungeons, visit the keep with its model of Jacobean Carlisle, and browse through displays of military weapons, medals, and uniforms at the King's Own Royal Border Regiment Museum. For an informative, closer look at the castle, sign up for a guided tour led by an expert. The castle was first built by William Rufus and has witnessed many attacks over its 900 years of history. A parliament was held here by Edward I during his Scottish campaign in 1306. In 1567 it became a temporary prison for Mary, Queen of Scots. • Really nice deceptively large historic fortress. When you first enter the castle you get the impression that most of it is taken up by Military buildings, but once you head off to the corner you really see the scale of this historic fortress, made up largely of empty rooms where you can see the scale of the wall thickness of the buildings, a number of exhibits detail the history of the castle and its various buildings. The military museum within the grounds is well worth visiting with extensive displays of military equipment through the ages.
  • A pleasant couple of hours spent wondering the castle ruins. Dogs welcome everywhere apart from the cafe, which is understandable. Military museum is also worth a visit. Also free of you are an English heritage member.
