Formby beach is the location of the first lifeboat station in the UK. Established perhaps as early as 1776 by William Hutchinson, Dock Master for the Liverpool Common Council. It was the first lifeboat station in the United Kingdom, and possibly the world. The foundations of the last of the lifeboat station buildings remain on the beach. The last launch took place in 1916.

    I’ve walked the dogs at the beach there for over 20 years before and after work. Best place ever for a walk regardless of the weather and the dogs love it. Since the NT took over the general running.....  more »

    Easily one of the best beaches around. Formby Beach is almost always clean, has lifeguards, is never really too busy and has lots to see during the walk there including red squirrels in the woodland. Features many gorgeous dunes for lots of fun with young children, and a nice long stretch of clean beach for walks with dogs. Evening walks here are the best.

    The best rural beach I know of. Lovely to walk along in (almost) any weather. A few minutes inland you are in lush woodland with the occasional red squirrel. One day out, two lovely country environments.
