Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple (Chinese: 佛光山西來寺; pinyin: Fóguāngshān Xīlái Sì) is a mountain monastery in the northern Puente Hills, Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles County, California. The name Hsi Lai means "coming west".

Hsi Lai Temple is a branch of Fo Guang Shan, a Buddhist organization from Taiwan. It is the order's first overseas branch temple and serves as the North American regional headquarters for Fo Guang Shan. Hsi Lai Temple was the site of the founding of Buddha's Light International Association, established in 1991. The temple, like its mother temple in Taiwan, practices Humanistic Buddhism.

  • I grew up around the area and have always known that this temple was on the hill but never visited it. I’m glad I checked it out. The grounds are very well manicured and the temple and the surrounding structures were amazing and huge! The views are also amazing since it is situated on a hillside. Be prepared to climbing a lot of stairs. Walking around, you’ll see all the different deity’s, who they are and what they stand for. There is a small museum where you can see some artifacts and art work. There is also a gift shop which had some cool things both affordable and expensive. When we were there, we were lucky enough to see an actual service and also partake in an offering and lighting incense. You don’t have to be a follower of Buddhism to visit this place. But if you appreciate learning about another culture and religion, this is definitely a cool place to visit. Plus it’s free! You do have to make an appointment to visit but one ticket is good for a whole vehicle.
  • What a gorgeous temple! Amazing views of the mountains. I visited during the Chinese New Year celebration and the entire complex was beautifully decorated. Prayer halls were awe inspiring. Attendees and staff were very friendly and helpful. Educational and thought provoking materials throughout the complex. There's a museum gallery as well. Parking can be tricky but they do have a parking lot so I imagine on regular days there would be available parking. During the New Year celebration, there was a shuttle service that we didn't use. We parked in a neighborhood nearby and walked to the temple. Definitely worth a visit 👍🏽
