Known primarily for its dramatic sunrises and sunsets, Haleakala Crater is the world's largest dormant volcano, forming more than 75 percent of the island of Maui. Over a million years old, the volcano is locally known as the "House of the Sun," its tallest peak rising up to 3,055 m (10,023 ft) above sea level. You can reach the summit, gaze into the crater, or walk across its floor by hiking up a series of rugged trails. Though there's little chance of an eruption, you must be extremely careful on the steep and often treacherous paths. Check the weather before you go and dress appropriately for cold temperatures at the summit. We went on a rainy day, and it was still quite something to see. So glad we did this, but dress warm and bring coats.

After agreeing that sunrise was too ambitious, we rushed over to catch the sunset. As recommended by the official site, we arrived at the lower carpark 1.5-2hrs before the sunset time. Good thing we did because the lower carpark filled up fast and the upper carpark was soon blocked off by rangers. On the way up, we stopped at one lookout and did a short hike at the lower carpark. We followed others and walked up the road towards the summit. I would highly recommend bringing blankets/ towels to wrap around or sit down on. Do pack long pants and a jacket. I was freezing in shorts so please don’t make the same mistake 😭 Note that the drive itself features lots of sharp curves and turns. It can be quite dangerous in the dark.

Came here for a hike before sunset and was not disappointed. This is a MUST SEE in Maui!!! The hike is hard coming up but so worth it. Photos do not do it justice.
