A bird-watcher's paradise, the historic Kilauea Lighthouse shares a peninsula with the Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary for rare seabirds such as the red-footed booby, wedge-tailed shearwater, and Laysan albatross. The 1913 lighthouse stands 15 m (52 ft) and features one of seven surviving Fresnel lenses, weighing in at an incredible 4,100 kg (9,000 lb) and floating on mercury and compressed air. The awe-inspiring lens was rotated by a series of pulleys, but hasn't been in use since the 1970s. Sitting on a peninsula 60 m (200 ft) above sea level, the spot serves as a great lookout for the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, sea turtles, and humpback whales. There is an awesome lookout at the end of Kilauea Rd. that has a great view of the lighthouse and the water. We waited in a long line of cars down the hill only to find out you had to reserve spots...

Beautiful and awesome viewpoint. Should be a quick stop, so don’t miss out. Will not take any extra time. We did not to go close to the light house as the access to it was close. Not sure what was the reason. But even though we did not get close to it, we still enjoyed the view.

Great experience and views. The staff and volunteers were super friendly and helpful. There are binoculars the borrow and kids got a biologist card to check off discovered wildlife. Overall it's worth going there but don't forget to book you timed tickets in advance.
