One of the area's most famous highways, Hana Highway - Road to Hana is about the journey rather than the destination. Your 84 km (52 mi) trip between Kahului and Hana will guide you to some of the island's most beautiful sites, many of which are significant in local mythology. You can drive the road yourself or take a tour. The latter is a better option for nervous drivers because the winding road is very narrow. Along the way, you'll see towering waterfalls, miles of coastline, and gardens, and will have several opportunities for hiking or swimming. Food vendors are dotted along the highway, but it's a good idea to bring water and snacks with you. Stop at Halfway to Hana to sample some of its famous banana bread. This is a must do drive if you are visiting Maui. Driving through entire Hana Highway will definitely take up almost entire day. There are many stops and viewpoints and everything is really beautiful. The road is really curvy and single lane only plus lot of people visit it, so surely it takes time to complete it.

56 bridges. Yup. Counted 'em all - I was a passenger, the driver needed to keep eyes on the road. Oy the locals! These mad folks would lean on their horns and drove the road like it was a private Formula One track. Go when there is plenty of daylight for the round trip and be patient. You are going to be stopping, pulling over and backing up. Smaller vehicles make the ride easier. Unless you're in a 4-wheel drive, plan on turning around after you are a few miles southwest of Hana (if not in Hana itself). The path (not really a "road") on the western side of Maui after leaving Hana is not for the feint-of-heart and the printed maps make it clear that issues encountered in the area are not covered by any rental car insurance. I will say that the black-rock beach (before the road turns to path) is a stunning site with aggressive surf/surge action. A "fun" drive for those into a challenging experience. A white-knuckle ride for everyone else. Many beautiful waterfalls - some of which were easy pull-off-the-road stops with facilities. The actual town of Hana wasn't worth the trip but the "experience" of the ride was.
